Nepal is the second richest country in the inland water resources in the world. Nepal consists 83,000 MW potentiality of hydropower Generation. Despite of huge potentiality of hydropower generation, Nepal is facing long hour load shedding problem. Firstly in Nepal, the electricity was produced at Farping in 1910. Up to now, there is production of hydropower of about 357.68 MW by NEA + 124.71 MW by IPP. But the annual peak power demand is about 1291.8 MW (Source: NEA year review 2014-15).

The Budhigandaki Hydropower project is Nepal’s 2nd reservoir/storage type project locate in Central DR (Dhading District) and Western DR (Gorkha District) at Budhigandaki River. Project has recommended 1200 MW capacity plant with FSL 540 masl. It is one of the National Pride Projects of Nepal. The some salient features of the Budhigandaki hydropower project are as follows:

  1. Dam: double curvature arch
  2.  Dam height: 263 m
  3.  Dam crest length/width: 700m/8 m
  4. Effective length u/s: 43 km
  5. Surface Area (at FSL): 63 sq. km
  6. Vertical shaft revolving type Generator
  7. Installed Capacity after upgrade as per the Design Concept Report: 6 x 200 MW = 1200 MW
  8. Mean Annual Energy : 3383 GWh
  9. Turbine Rated Speed: 230.8 rpm
  10.  Sub-stations at Naubise and Hetauda.
  11. Total Budget: about 250 billion
